We can definitely recommend Housmans in the town which has good ales and a varied menu of modern European food. Often there is live music at the end of the dining area on quieter nights of the week so do check their website.

Probably the best pubs in the local area are the Green Dragon and The Ragleth Inn (food 12-2.15pm, 6.30-9pm) in Little Stretton, which is around a mile walk. In particular the Green Dragon is open all day serving food and is very well reviewed and has a great selection of ales (including Butty Bach and HPA from Wye Valley Brewery) and ciders on tap and great food, although you’ll likely need to call and book on 01694722925. For the more adventurous there is a 4.5 mile walk taking in the hills. For the exact route download ‘OS Maps’ and take their free 7-day trial of the 1:25,000 map and search on Routes for ‘Clearviews to Green Dragon’ or click here to view the route or on your smartphone to open it. Another great walk is to The Royal Oak (closed Mondays, 12-2.30pm & 6-9pm food) in Cardington with the optional route over Caer Caradoc with spectacular views.

Catch is a new restaurant and bar that opened in November 2017 together with the Stretton Ale House which opens daily from 12-10.30pm (closes at 8pm Sundays). Note that some restaurants close selectively on Mondays.

The Yew Tree Inn pub and restaurant in All Stretton (200m along the road) has recently re-opened to the public and offers a warm welcome and decent ales and food.

Or try a five mile walk (2.5 hours, click here for route) over the Long Mynd to The Bridges in Ratlinghope which offers a wide selection of ales from the Three Tuns Brewery and good food, then catch the shuttle bus back into Church Stretton. Another destination is the Ludlow Brewery by the rail station in Ludlow which opens 10-5pm (6pm Fridays) serving award-winning ale Ludlow Gold. Also The Plough Inn at Winstantow is tied to Woods Brewery and offers food and ales at lunchtime and evening.

In Church Stretton the Sawaddee Thai restaurant in the market square is very good and the Jaipur Lounge Indian restaurant on the main street is popular. The Kings Arms (recently renovated and expanded serving food all day) and The Bucks Head are both character traditional pubs.

Further afield Fishmore Hall just outside Ludlow offers an amazing tasting menu at £70/head and also The Station at Marshbrook offers a selection of great steaks and ales. The Clive offers traditional British food on the same site as The Ludlow Food Centre which offers a wide selection of local produce if you plan to cook at the lodge.

For a decent cooked breakfast try the Lazy Trout Cafe or a more traditional breakfast in Jemima’s Kitchen at Victoria House. There are several cafe and coffee houses including Mr Bun the Baker, Ginger & Green Coffee House, Holly Bush Cafe and Berry’s. The Applegreen petrol station on the A49 also has a Subway and Costa Coffee (6am-7pm).

The Indian and Thai restaurants in Church Stretton offer takeaway collection, as well as The New Ruby and Ying Wah (chinese), Flamingo’s Pizza & Kebab House, Best Kebab & Burger House and Church Stretton Fish Bar (12-2, 5-9).

The Co-op is open until 10pm (4pm Sunday) and local produce is available from Endsons Farm Butchers and Hough & Sons in town.
